Forget about, matcha latte. It’s already old news. Everyone is talking about Golden milk these days and that is good. Some call it Turmeric Tea some Turmeric Latte. No matter what you name it, with the right mixture of spices, it is a delicious soothing remedy.
Curcumin is the main bioactive compound in the Indian spice turmeric and is responsible for turmeric’s brilliant gold color.
Turmeric is most well-known for its use in curry dishes, but it’s earning a name for itself as a diverse medicinal food. For example, turmeric calms and soothes inflammation and has a detoxifying effect on liver and gallbladder.
Although turmeric has been valued for its many benefits for centuries, in the western world it is not commonly consumed. Golden milk has the potential to change that.
How to prepare Golden Milk
Here’s a suggestion on how to prepare a golden milk. There are many variations, so feel free to change it as you prefer.
Ingredients:
2 cups of milk of choice (coconut, almond, pecan, soy and others)
1 teaspoon turmeric powder (less if you use fresh turmeric)
¼ teaspoon ginger powder or a tiny piece of fresh ginger root
1 teaspoon cinnamon powder
½ teaspoon coconut oil
Pinch of black pepper
Pinch of ground vanilla
1 teaspoon raw honey or agave syrup to taste (optional)
Instructions:
Put all ingredients into a small sauce pan and heat for a couple of minutes over medium heat. Make sure it’s hot but not boiling.
Then pour it in a blender and blend everything (especially if you use fresh turmeric and ginger) until smooth.
Warning: Turmeric may stain blenders, counter tops or any kind of garment. I learned it the hard way when I didn’t watch the stove and everything boiled over. There were big yellowish stains all over my white (!) kitchen front. I googled immediately what to do about it and read that sun light might help. And surprise: The next day, after the morning sun did its trick and shined directly on the kitchen front, the stains were gone. So I was really lucky here, but I would advise you to not try it yourself.
Besides the risk of leaving stains, golden milk is a perfect drink for cold winter days and nights. I like to drink it before bed as it aids relaxation and helps boost the immune system while sleeping.
